A special lunar new year event is being staged by Auckland’s Korean community tomorrow Saturday in Otara.

YongRahn Park, of the Korean Positive Ageing Charitable Trust (KPACT), says everyone is invited to join in the fun activities for Seollal – Lunar New Year Celebration (Korean Day) on February 21.

“Seollal is one of Korea’s most important traditional holidays, a meaningful time that celebrates family, respect, and new beginnings.

“This event offers a wonderful opportunity to explore Korea’s rich culture, people, and traditions through cultural activities, traditional customs, and a vibrant festive atmosphere marking the Lunar New Year,” says Park.

Activities will include a children’s Sebae ceremony, and live performances of Samulnori drumming and percussion, by the New Korean Symphony Orchestra, and traditional Korean dancing.

Park adds there will also be Korean food tasting, games, and Hanbok experience.

  • The 2026 Seollal Lunar New Year Celebration (Korean Day) is on Saturday, February 21, from 2-5pm at Te Puke Otara Community Centre, 20 Newbury Street, in Otara. Entry is free.
