Cape Coral girl wins Teen Vogue award

Sedona Scott likes to think outside the box. Growing up in Cape Coral, art projects were an opportunity to design clothes.”I was like, I’m going to put these butterflies on the pants,” Scott said, laughing.Scott graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design, where she learned the fashion industry isn’t for the faint of heart.”You could put in all the hard work you want, but you need somebody to recognize the hard work,” Scott said.That somebody for Sedona wasn’t just anybody.Teen Vogue, otherwise known as the holy grail of fashion, picked Scott and four of her fellow graduates for the 2024 “Generation Next” award.”That was a really awesome feeling,” Scott said. “You know how amazing they are as designers and how much work they put in. It was cool to see how my peers and I got this recognition.”For Sedona, fashion is more than just looking pretty.”The fashion industry is one of the most polluting industries. You think of how you’re going to change that.”Her collection submitted to Teen Vogue was made out of organic materials and recycled cotton. “You want to make clothes that have a meaning behind them,” Scott said.What means the most to Scott strings everything together.”This is my grandma,” Scott said as she showed us photos representing her family’s Hawaiian roots that inspired her clothing collection. “This is my great grandma. All have the middle name ‘Lehua.'”Scott also weaved her mom, Marie, into her brand.”I think now she has the confidence to know that anything she’s dreaming, she can actually do it,” Marie said.Authenticity helps Scott put her dreams into action.”Just keep going for it because you might be making paper dresses now, but in a few years, you could literally be making wedding dresses,” Scott said. “And you could be in Teen Vogue.”
