CAST-in-Action: Inside the Fashion Design and Merchandising Association – News

The College of Applied Science and Technology (CAST) is taking a deep dive into its Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) through the CAST-in-Action series. It’s an opportunity to peer into the extra-curricular activities that are shaping the campus lives of students through the narrative of student leaders.

This episode features a conversation with Fashion Design and Merchandising Association (FDMA) club president, Reese Sanburg.

Q: What is the role of FDMA at Illinois State University?

Sanburg: The Fashion Design and Merchandising Association, is a student organization in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences that is dedicated to fostering creativity and professional development in the fashion industry. We offer a range of hands-on activities for students such as sewing, screen printing, and embroidery classes. Our goal is to support local fashion interests while preparing students for careers in merchandising and design.

Q: Can you share your personal journey to becoming FDMA’s president?

Sanburg: I started at a community college studying art before transferring to ISU, where I shifted my focus to clothing construction. I was initially nervous about getting involved since I did not have a lot of experience, but one of my professors encouraged me to take on leadership roles. Becoming FDMA president has been a rewarding experience that has allowed me to build confidence and gain real-world skills in design, event planning, and networking.

Q: What are some of FDMA’s key highlights in the past academic year?

Sanburg: We’ve had some exciting events! One highlight was our visit to Land’s End headquarters in Wisconsin, where students got an inside look at daily operations and career opportunities at the facility. We have also hosted smaller events like screen printing workshops and networking meetings with industry professionals. Additionally, our partnership with the Office of Sustainability has allowed us to promote sustainable fashion through initiatives like Fix It Friday, where students mend clothes, fix jewelry, and polish shoes.

Q: What are some of the benefits of being a member of FDMA?

Sanburg: One of our biggest opportunities is through the National Retail Federation (NRF). As part of ISU’s NRF chapter, we connect students with professionals and provide access to the annual NRF Convention in New York. This event is a fantastic way for students to network, explore internships, and gain insight into the business side of fashion.

Q: What are some of the biggest challenges in running an RSO like FDMA?

Sanburg: Managing event approvals and scheduling can be quite challenging. Planning successful events requires coordination with different departments and balancing the schedules of busy students. However, seeing our events come to life and watching students engage in their passion makes it all worthwhile.

Q: How does fashion influence campus culture at ISU?

Sanburg: While fashion might not be at the forefront of every student’s mind, it still plays a role in self-expression and professional development. Students balance between dressing comfortably for classes and professionally for job interviews. FDMA provides a space where students can explore and appreciate fashion in a supportive community.

Q: What advice do you have for students interested in fashion?

Sanburg: Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there! It’s easy to get caught up in self-doubt, but taking opportunities and believing in yourself is key. Whether through FDMA or other industry connections, there are so many ways to explore and grow in fashion. Get involved, take risks, and pursue your passion!

Q: How often does FDMA meet?

Sanburg: We meet every other Tuesday night.

Q: Any final thoughts?

Sanburg: I want to encourage students to take advantage of the resources available to them. Whether it’s learning new skills, networking, or engaging in sustainable fashion initiatives, there’s so much to gain from being part of FDMA. Thank you for the opportunity to share our mission!
